LONDON – Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain has congratulated the Suraye people on the ordination of Mar Awa Royel III as Catholicos-Patriarch of the Assyrian Church of the East on September 13 in Ankawa, Iraq.
Bishop of the Diocese of London and Western Europe Abraham Youkhanis received a telegram from Queen Elizabeth II of Britain in which the Queen expressed her gratitude for the Bishop’s briefing on developments within the Assyrian Church of the East, and sends her congratulations to the Patriarch and best wishes to Bishop Abraham Youkhanis and to all members of the Suraye community in the United Kingdom.
The Queen’s son Prince Charles has met several times with Syriac communities in the UK and in the Middle East. In 2004, he visited the Syriac community and monasteries in Tur Abdin, southeastern Turkey. Prince Charles intends to visit Jordan and Egypt in November on trip for religious tolerance. According to the BBC, the trip will visit holy sites and interfaith events that will promote tolerance between different religions.
