ZALIN, Syria – In North and East Syria, women have always had a leading role in all aspects of life. It is due to this that the Women’s Office of Zalin (Qamishli) in the Democratic Autonomous Administration (DAA) have planned a unique project in the region.
A member of the Women’s Office in Zalin (Qamishli) Municipality, Afifa Suleiman explains that, in partnership with the Women’s Coordinator, they are currently running an all women’s market, which includes 14 shops, with each shop employing at least 1 woman. Suleiman told Syriac TV channel Suroyo TV that the market consists of book shops, clothing stores, in addition to textile workshops where women can use machines for sewing.
The women’s market was officially inaugurated on 8th March, which marks International Women’s Day, under the auspices of a number of civil society organizations. According to Suleiman, the goal of the market project is to provide job opportunities for women from all communities of the region, proposing to expand the location of the market and increase the goods it has to offer.
