Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi arrested again by Iranian regime

BEIRUT — Amnesty International called on Iranian authorities to immediately and unconditionally release human rights activist Narges Mohammadi who was rearrested last Tuesday west of Tehran. Mohammadi has been arrested numerous times by the Iranian regime for her activism. She was released from prison two years ago.

Iranian security forces arrested Mohammadi at her home in the city of Karaj on multiple charges of propaganda against the regime.

“Narges Mohammadi is a prisoner of conscience who has been targeted solely for her peaceful human rights activities and is now at imminent risk of 80 lashes,” said Heba Moreyef, Director of the Middle East and North Africa Regional Office at Amnesty International.

Moreyef added that the arrest of a human rights defender for her call for truth and justice on the second anniversary of the November 2019 protests, when hundreds of men, women, and children were killed by Iranian security forces, is a cruel act and a reminder of the crisis of systemic impunity in Iran for crimes against human rights advocates.

Amnesty International urged the international community, including the United Nations and the European Union, to speak out about Mohammadi’s case.

The organization said that, “the Iranian authorities must release her immediately and unconditionally, rescind her unjust sentence and ensure her protection from all forms of torture, including flogging.”
