ANKAWA, Iraq — On Tuesday, a delegation from the Beth Nahrain Patriotic Union (Huyodo d-Bethnahrin Athroyo, HBA) visited Catholicos-Patriarch of the Assyrian Church of the East Mar Awa Royel at his residence.
The visiting delegation included HBA head Yousef Yaqoub Matti, HBA official in Nineveh Branch Hazim Daoud Karumi, and former Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian member of the Iraqi parliament Joseph Sliwa.
The delegation offered congratulations to the Patriarch on Christmas and New Year and wished him success in the service of the Church. Matti briefed the Patriarch on the HBA’s 30-year struggle for political and cultural rights and its achievements to date.
Matti also clarified how the HBA was able to maintain its independence in political decisions, explaining its patriotic and national vision for the Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian people, its intellectual approach, and its national aspirations regarding Iraq and the Iraqi people.
Sliwa spoke about the representation of the Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian people in parliament and the obstacles that led to a lack of cohesion among members of parliament.
Patriarch Mar Awa Royel, in turn, touched on the situation of the Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian people in Iraq. He thanked the visiting delegation and wished them success in their struggle and work.
