United Nations considers the elimination of the leader of ISIS an important development and the root causes of terrorism must be dealt with

NEW YORK – The United Nations has expressed the importance of the elimination of ISIS leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashemi al-Qurashi, and called on the international community not to stop in its efforts to combat the organization.

Speaking at the UN Security Council, UN Under-Secretary General for Counterterrorism Vladimir Voronkov called the liquidation of al-Qurashi during a special American operation in the Syrian province of Edleb (Idlib) earlier this month, “perhaps the most prominent in the series of blows suffered by ISIS in recent months.”

He warned at the same time that this organization, despite incurring similar losses in the past, is known for its ability to restructure its ranks and to continue and intensify its activities in various conflict areas.

Voronkov added that the United Nations, since the attacks of September 11, 2001, has realized that the fight against terrorism is a long-term task, and there are no quick solutions.

The head of the United Nations Office of Counterterrorism called on all 193 member states of the organization to support Iraq and Syria’s efforts to preserve the achievements that have been made in the fight against ISIS, to prevent its expansion in the region again, and to limit the organization’s capabilities to launch attacks and attract new members to its ranks.

According to a UN report that Voronkov showed to the Security Council, the number of ISIS members held in prisons run by the Syrian Democratic Forces is estimated at 10,000, including about two thousand foreign terrorists.
