Mar Addai II Giwargis, Catholicos-Patriarch of the Ancient Church of the East, passes away
BAGHDAD/SELEUCIA-CTESIPHON – The Holy Synod of the Ancient Church of the East has announced the passing on to eternal life of Catholicos-Patriarch of the Ancient Church of the East Mar Addai II Giwargis. The Holy Synod announced the news in a press statement.
Mar Addai II Giwargis passed on this Friday February 11, 2022, at the age of 74, after having served the Ancient Church of the East as Catholicos-Patriarch since February 20, 1972. The Ancient Church of the East will make announcements regarding the funeral arrangement for the Catholicos-Patriarch.
Mar Addai II also held the title of archbishop of Baghdad and Basra. Last year, Mar Addai II had delegated much of his pastoral duties to fellow bishops.
The Ancient Church of the East is one of the smaller churches of the Suraye (Chaldeans-Syriacs-Assyrians) and stems from the Church of the East. The Church of the East is now divided into three Syriac churches: the Chaldean Church, the Assyrian Church of the East, and the Ancient Church of the East.
