Syriac Union Party recalls Syriac Military Council resistance to ISIS invasion of Khabur

NORTH AND EAST SYRIA — With the 7th anniversary of resistance of the Syriac Military Council (Mawtbo Fulḥoyo Suryoyo, MFS) in the Khabur River Valley of North and East Syria, the Syriac Union Party (SUP) issued a statement commemorating those who gave their lives.

“We remember the souls of the righteous martyrs and their steadfastness against the Islamic State [ISIS]. The MFS resistance saved the lives of thousands of defenseless civilians after they transferred them to safe areas.”

The SUP stated that the Khabur resistance which began on 23 February drew the path to freedom with the blood of the martyrs. “The MFS heroes in cooperation with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) managed to liberate the entire regions of North and East Syria from ISIS control, and war against terrorism is still ongoing,” read the statement.

The SUP’s statement said that Turkey and its Syrian National Army (SNA) proxies now seek to occupy the Khabur Region and destabilize it, preventing the return of the rightful inhabitants.

The SUP statement stressed the need to work with all the Syriac-Assyrian political forces to defend the demands of our Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people, prevent demographic change and work to ensure stability and reconstruction. It also stressed the importance of moving towards a political solution in Syria.
