Syriac Catholic Patriarch Younan celebrates Mor Aphrem feast in Beirut

BEIRUT — On Saturday, Syriac Catholic Patriarch Mor Ignatius Joseph III Younan held a Divine Liturgy to mark the Feast of Mor Aphrem the Syriac. Mor Aphrem is the patron saint of the Syriac Church, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Annunciation in Beirut.

The Divine Liturgy was attended by Syriac Maronite Patriarch Mor Bechara Boutros al-Raï, Apostolic Nuncio to Lebanon Archbishop Joseph Spiteri, Patriarchal Vicar to the Armenian Catholics Archbishop Georges Asadourian, and several bishops, priests, deacons, monks, nuns, and a large number of believers.

In his sermon, Patriarch Younan spoke about Mor Aphrem, a monk who was ideal in devotion, fasting, prayer, cultivating, guiding, and teaching. Mor Aphrem was a pioneer when he composed a hymns choir for girls and the Church in the East and West followed him.
