U.S. State Department meets with leaders of North and East Syria
NORTH AND EAST SYRIA — The U.S. State Department for Near Eastern Affairs stated via Twitter that Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Iran and Iraq Jennifer Gavito and Director of Iraq and Syria Affairs at the National Security Council Zahra Bell met with leaders of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) of North and East Syria.
They discussed regional stability, relations, economic conditions, and the ongoing war against the Islamic State (ISIS).
According to the U.S. State Department for Near Eastern Affairs, discussions with the SDC focused on the stability of the liberated areas in North and East Syria, in addition to addressing the challenging economic situation, increasing humanitarian aid access, improving conditions for IDPs, and the importance of human rights and accountability.
The discussions with the SDF focused on the ongoing efforts to combat ISIS, security at Al-Hol Refugee Camp — which houses refugees and women and children associated with ISIS — and the repatriation of detainees, an especially important point given ISIS’s recent attack on Al-Sina’a Prison in Hasakah, according to the U.S. Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
