Syrian ISIS member arrested in Germany accused of torturing prisoners
BERLIN — German investigators have arrested a Syrian man accused of war crimes for allegedly torturing prisoners when he was a member of the Islamic State (ISIS) in Syria in 2014 and for his participation in the ISIS attack on the Arab Shaitat clan in Dayro Zcuro (Deir ez-Zor).
Federal prosecutors said the man, identified only as “Raed E.” was arrested in Berlin. In keeping with Germany’s privacy protection laws, they did not explain how or when he came to Germany.
The accused joined ISIS in the summer of 2014 and participated in an attack in August the same year on the Shaitat clan in Dayro Zcuro, according to the prosecution. Activists reported that the death toll from that attack amounted to 700 people.
He is accused of abusing and physically torturing three prisoners following the attack.
The prosecution explained in a statement that, in addition to working in ISIS prisons, Raed participated in the process of transactions to purchase the freedom of a number of Al-Shaitat prisoners and guarded two checkpoints for the extremist organization.
