Warnings of increased Iranian control in Syria

GOLAN, Syria — In an article for Israel Today, Israeli journalist Lilach Shoval argued that, “With the end of the war in Syria, the Israeli Army is facing a new threat, which is brought by demographic change and a clear rise in the Shiite population in Syria.”

“There are concerns that Iran and Hezbollah will exploit the situation in order to recruit Shiite supporters and activists, as they did in Lebanon,” she added, indicating that Iran is trying to take advantage of the situation in Syria, not with the approval and consent of the head of the Syrian regime Bashar al-Assad, who chose Moscow over Tehran.

Head of the opposition Syrian National Coalition Salem al-Maslat warned the international community and Arab countries that Iranian militias in Syria would benefit from Russia’s preoccupation with its war in Ukraine, pointing to the increase in Iranian control in Syria, which poses a threat to the stability and security of all countries in the region.
