TURKEY: Imprisoned opposition leader Demirtaş says not important who is nominated as HDP candidate so long as they embody the party’s values

ANKARA — Former Co-Chair of the left-wing Peoples’ Democratic Party (Halkların Demokratik Partisi, HDP) Selahattin Demirtaş stated that a candidate can be supported in the upcoming presidential elections provided that they accepts the document of the HDP stance.

“What matters is not the name of the presidential candidate, but the principles that they abide by,” Demirtaş declared in a press statement.

Regarding his candidacy, Demirtaş stated that the HDP may nominate him in the presidential elections if any developments took place. However, if he remains politically banned and imprisoned, another candidate will be nominated.

Demirtaş was the HDP candidate during the presidential elections in 2018. At that time, he got more than 8 million votes despite the intimidation and repression of the Turkish government against HDP cadres and leaders.
