Syria will become forgotten crisis, says a UN official
DARAMSUQ — In a session of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator Joyce Msuya warned that there is a real risk that Syria will turn into a forgotten crisis.
“As the eyes of the world turn to other conflicts — Syria is on the verge of becoming yet another forgotten crisis despite millions of Syrians struggling each month to survive,” she briefed.
Msuya stressed that current cross-line missions cannot at this time substitute the size and scope of the cross-border operations they complement. All channels for delivering life-saving aid to those in need should remain open and available and she urged the renewal of the United Nations cross-border authorization in July.
Msuya stated that 1 million people in northwest Syria need humanitarian assistance, with many living in tents and dependent on humanitarian relief organizations to survive.
“They deserve to live in dignity,” she added
