Young Syriac youth wins German kickboxing championship

DARMSTADT, Germany — A young Syriac, Yohannes Romolos Hanna (15), finished first in the 55 kg weight category in the 2022 Super Cup Kickboxing Championship held in Darmstadt, Germany, on 30 April. Hanna was supported by his family, friends, and the Syriac community in Germany.

Yohannes is son of the Syriac Dr. Romolos Hanna who hails from the town of Qabre Hewore (Al-Qahtaniayh) in the Zalin (Qamishli) countryside in North and East Syria.

In an interview, Yohannes’ father spoke about their Syriac origin saying, “Yohannes’ grandfather is deacon Issa Muallem, who was one of the first teachers of the Syriac language in the Gozarto region of Syria. Yohannes is from a family that is devoted to knowledge.”

He added that Yohannes is interested in science, sports, and programming.
