Swiss and French NGOs to reconstruct Syriac Orthodox Mor Tuma Cathedral in Mosul, Iraq
MOSUL, Iraq — Syriac Orthodox Archbishop of Mosul, Kerkeslokh (Kirkuk), and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq Mor Nicodemus Daoud Sharaf met with representatives of the Swiss ALIPH and French O’CEuvre d’Orient non-governmental organizations specialized in antiquities on Thursday.
During the meeting, an agreement was signed to begin reconstruction on the historic Mor Tuma Cathedral in Mosul, originally constructed in the 19th century. The final project plans and implementation phases were also agreed upon.
This step took place after requests of Archbishop Mor Nicodemus to the international community and concerned organizations for reconstructing the churches of Mosul after they were destroyed during the Islamic State’s (ISIS) control of the city.
The Syriac Catholic Mor Tuma Church in the city has already undergone restoration. Last week, the first Divine Liturgy at the church since its renovation was broadcast live on SuroyoTV.
