Syriac Women’s Union Official Barsomo: Turkey aims for demographic change in North and East Syria

ZALIN, Syria — Under the slogan “Stop the Aggressive Turkish Policies against Peoples of North and East Syria,” the Syriac Union Party (SUP) in Syria, the Syriac Women’s Union (SWU), and the Syriac Progressive Youth Union organized a public protest in Zalin (Qamishli), North and East Syria.

In comments to the SyriacPress news desk, head of the SWU’s Zalin branch Georgette Barsomo stated that the sit-in protest was organized to denounce the ongoing Turkish violations on North and East Syria and Iraq, especially the Khabur River Valley and Nineveh Plains.

“The Turkish project to resettle Syrian refugees is nothing but demographic change and a Turkification of the region,” Barsomo added.

She indicated that these regions are characterized by the ancient civilizations of peoples who have been living here for thousands of years but Turkey is trying to change these regions’ identity.

“Turkey seeks striking peace and the democratic project in the region,” said Barsomo, indicating that Turkish history is already full of massacres against the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean), Armenian, Kurdish, and Arab peoples.
