Syriac Union Party Co-Chair Barsoum: Turkish plan for full-scale invasion of North and East Syria met with a regional and international rejection, though attacks continue
ZALIN, Syria — In comments made to Suroyo TV, Co-Chair of the Syrian Union Party (SUP) Sanharib Barsoum said that the Turkish plan to invade and occupy the regions of North and Eastern Syria has met with regional and international rejection, and what we are witnessing today is seeking to strike the Democratic Autonomous-administration (DAA) project.
Barsoum said that Turkey’s project is purely expansionist, a fact that has become clear in recent years.
Turkey had previously wanted to enter and occupy new areas in Tal Rifaat and Mabbug (Manbij), but this project was rejected regionally and internationally, especially by America and Russia, which do not want any new changes to the position of forces in Syria. After the international rejection of Turkey’s plans, the Turkish government escalated again on the border areas between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and Turkey, conducting drone strikes and artillery bombardment in and around Ayn Issa, Amuda, Darbasiyah, Zalin (Qamishli) and its villages, and the villages around Qabre Hewore (Al-Malikiyah).
He added, “Today, we see that the Turkish regime is seeking to strike the project of the Democratic Autonomous Administration on the one hand, and strike security and community peace on the other.”
He concluded his speech by saying, “We, as a Syriac Union Party, reject this intervention and targeting of the region and civilians, and we call on the guarantor powers such as Russia and America to play an effective role in stopping violations, stopping attacks, and maintaining peace and security in order to initiate a political solution for Syria in general.”
