International condemnation of violence in Iraq and calls for calm

BAGHDAD — Commenting on the recent violent events in Iraq, in which dozens were killed and wounded, Pope Francis, in his interview with the faithful in the Vatican, stated that he is following with concern the events of violence that took place in Baghdad and elsewhere in Iraq.

“Let us pray to God for peace to the Iraqi people,” said the Pope.

Pope Francis added that he was happy to visit Iraq in 2021, and he felt the Iraqi people’s great desire to return to normal life and coexistence. He stressed that dialogue and brotherhood are the path that should be followed to face the current difficulties and reach a national peace.

The UN Security Council issued a statement following the unrest expressing their deep concern over reports of deaths and injuries. The Council called on all parties to peacefully resolve their political disputes, respect the rule of law, and the right to peaceful assembly and avoid violence.
