Syriac Women’s Union participates in International Women’s Conference in Tunisia
TUNIS — Over the weekend, the Syriac Women’s Union (SWU) participated in the International Women’s Conference that was held in the Tunisian capital of Tunis.
The conference included women’s unions and organizations from close to 50 countries.
In a statement to our news desk, SWU head Georgette Barsoum stated that the SWU participated in the first day of the conference, adding that only 30 women’s organizations participated due to security conditions in their country or lack of transportation.
Barsoum added that the conference began with a march from Bourguiba Street in Tunis. The participating organizations gathered in the Cultural Center Square at the end of Bourguiba street and chanted slogans in favor of women’s rights and against violence against them.
Barsoum indicated that singers performed songs inspired by women’s rights. Then, questions were directed to the conference’s organizing committee.
The first day agenda ended with chanting slogans against violence against women and thanking the committee that organized the conference.
