Chaldean Catholic Patriarch Louis Sako calls for merging of Chaldean Church and Assyrian Church of the East

BAGHDAD — In an article published by Noor Sat TV, Chaldean Catholic Patriarch Louis Raphael Sako said that he does not see anything that prevents the merging of the Chaldean Catholic Church and the Assyrian Church of the East under the name of the Church of the East.

He added that the same is true of the Syriac Catholic Church and the Syriac Orthodox Church, which could exist under the name of the Syriac Church of Antioch. The same is the case with other Churches where there is common liturgy, language, heritage, and history.

The Patriarch says that the matter of ethnicity or naming conventions is unimportant as the Churches embrace a number of peoples, nationalities, and languages.

He concluded by saying that, today, the project to unify the Churches is being studied from all sides through courageous dialogue so that the Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian people have a future and remain influential in their respective societies. Today, they are scattered around the world and have become a minority in the East due to injustice and emigration, when they once made up the vast majority of the region’s population.
