Executive Committee of Syriac Union Party participates in funeral ceremonies in Zalin and Hasakah of martyrs killed in Turkish drone attacks

NORTH AND EAST SYRIA — On Wednesday, funerals were held for two officials of the Democratic Autonomous Administration (DAA) of North and East Syria, Co-Chairs of the Justice and Reform Office Zeyneb Mihemed and Yelmaz Shero, and a member of the Women’s Protection Units (Yekîneyên Parastina Jin, YPJ), Beritan Dersim, killed in Turkish drone strikes.

Prior to becoming Co-Chair of the Justice and Reform Office, Zeynep Mihemed served as the head of the DAA’s Women’s Board.

Co-Chairs Mihemed and Shero were driving to do checks on the regional centers of the Justice and Reform Office when the car they were in was targeted by a Turkish drone.

The Executive Committee of the Syriac Union Party (SUP) participated in the funerals alongside delegations from the Democratic Autonomous Administrations (DAA) and Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). In Zalin (Qamishli), the body of Martyr Shero was carried to the Shrine of Martyr Dalil Sarukhan. Thousands of people from across Gozarto (Jazira) Region participated.

Speakers at Martyr Shero’s funeral stressed that North and East Syria faces difficult challenges in its democratic project. The peoples of the region must unite to achieve these goals and follow in the footsteps of martyrs to thwart the schemes of regional powers who seek to undermine coexistence and democracy.

In Hasakah, a separate funeral ceremony was held for Martyr Mihemed and Martyr Dersim.

The funeral procession started in front of the Martyrs’ Families Council in Hasakah and carried the martyr’s coffins towards the Shrine of Martyr Dajwar in the village of Daoudia. The procession chanted slogans glorifying the resistance of the two martyrs.

Upon arrival at the shrine, the ceremony began with a minute of silence in honor of the martyrs’ souls. A military parade by the fighters of the People’s Protection Units (Yekîneyên Parastina Gel, YPG) and YPJ followed, honoring their sacrifices.
