Mayor of Baghdede visits Washington, D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — On 12 and 13 October, Mayor of Baghdede in Nineveh Plains, Iraq, Issam Behnam Matti visited the US and met with government officials in Washington, D.C.

Matti’s meeting schedule was coordinated by the Syriac American Union, whose representatives participated in the meetings.

They met with former Chair of US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) and President of International Religious Freedom Secretariat (IRF) Nadine Maenza, who is known for her support for the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people.

They also met with President of the Washington, D.C.-based Family Research Council Tony Perkins and US State Department officials covering Iraqi affairs. They discussed peace and modernization efforts.

The meetings also touched on world political developments and the political and security situation in Iraq, with a focus on the issue of the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people and the importance of their presence in their homeland.
