ZALIN, Syria — On Friday, the Syriac Women’s Union (SWU) held its 4th conference, at Al-Salam Hall in Zalin (Qamishli), North and East Syria, with the participation of SWU members and representatives of bodies and institutions of the Democratic Autonomous Administration (DAA) of North East Syria.
The conference included several speeches, which stressed the importance of women’s role in society advancement at all levels, including defending their land and people, in addition to the SWU role in empowering women and developing their potentials.
During the conference, a five-member Bureau Committee was formed. The committee read the annual report, including the SWU most prominent works within two years. Several congratulatory telegrams were also read. They also discussed with the attendees some items related to the SWU bylaw, and they voted for items amendment.
Ilham Matli was elected as the SWU General Official in Syria. The SWU official in Hasakah Branch Sham Quryo read the final statement, in which the women pledged to achieve their goals, so that Syrian women in general and Syriac women in particular would obtain their full rights.
The statement also stressed the need to achieve full societal commitment to gender equality to enhance women’s freedom, because no rights can be taken without collective action and without women’s participation.
The conference resulted in several outputs, the most prominent of which were holding educational and organizational courses for the SWU members, holding military and first aid courses for the Syriac women, opening the Ashtarot House in Qabre Hewore (Qahtaniyah) and Dayrik (Malikiyah) and opening kindergartens for children.
