Catholicos-Patriarch of the Assyrian Church of the East Mor Awa III Royel visits Assyrian Genocide memorial in Athens
ATHENS — Catholicos-Patriarch of the Assyrian Church of the East Mor Awa III Royel, accompanied by metropolitans and priests, visited the Assyrian Genocide Memorial in Athens, Greece.
The Patriarch presided over a Divine Liturgy for the souls of the martyrs at the Church of Our Lady in Athens.
He placed a wreath on the monument in appreciation and respect for the martyrs of the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people who were martyred during the reign of the Ottoman Empire in 1915.
The Patriarch stressed the importance of remembering the martyrs who watered the land of Beth Nahrin (Mesopotamia) with their pure blood.
Earlier, on 6 November, the Patriarch presided over a Divine Liturgy at the Church of Virgin Mary in Athens in the presence of a large crowd of parishioners.
During his sermon, Patriarch Awa III Royel invited the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people in Greece to pay attention and adhere to their sacred identity and language.
