Mar Gewargis III Younan elected as new Patriarch of Ancient Church of the East

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA — On Saturday, the Ancient Church of the East announced the election of Archbishop Mar Gewargis Younan, Bishop of the Diocese of the Eastern United States of America and All of Europe and Secretary of the Holy Synod, as its new Patriarch.

In a statement, the Synod of Bishops of the Ancient Church of the East announced the election  after the council convened at the Blessed Mor Odisho Church in Chicago, USA.

Archbishop Mar Gewargis Younan will become the 110th Catholicos-Patriarch of the Ancient Church of the East, succeeding Mar Eddie II Gewargis.

The bishops of the Church offered their heartfelt congratulations and warm prayers to the elected Patriarch and prayed to the Lord to help him with His strength and guide the Patriarch him in his sacred duties as a faithful servant of the word of the Lord and as a spiritual father to the sons and daughters of the Church.

The consecration and ordination of the new Patriarch will take place on the 9 June in the Virgin Mary Cathedral of the ancient Eastern Church in Baghdad.
