Syriac Orthodox Archbishop Mor Maurice Amsih congratulates Syrian Democratic Council on 7th anniversary of founding
HASAKAH, Syria — Syriac Orthodox Archbishop of Gozarto (Jazira) and Euphrates Mor Maurice Amsih visited the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) of North and East Syria at its headquarters in Hasakah, North and East Syria, to congratulate officials on the 7th anniversary of the founding of the SDC.
Archbishop Amsih expressed his support for the democratic project led by the SDC and praised its efforts and struggle for a unified Syria free of terrorism and extremism.
The archbishop’s visit took place amid the ongoing Turkish attacks and aggression targeting the region. During the meeting, he condemned the attacks and expressed his concerns over a possible Turkish invasion. The threatening statements made by Turkish officials in this regard seek to undermine the stability of the region, which has experienced a period of peaceful coexistence under the Democratic Autonomous Administration (DAA).
The archbishop added that the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) liberated the Syrian territory from the abomination of terrorism and extremism.
He confirmed that he had sent a letter to the Vatican, expressing his concerns over the renewed Turkish threats and the Turkish government’s attempts to strike at the ethnic and religious cooperation in the region and exacerbate the suffering of the Syrian people for its own benefit.
The SDC members thanked the archbishop for the visit. They also expressed their appreciation for the role of the Church in maintaining societal balance and their role in the Syrian-Syrian dialogue which the SDC sees as the best possibility for a political solution to the country’s decade-long political crisis.
