Syriac Maronite Patriarch al-Rai receives parliamentarians Gebran Bassil and Fouad Makhzoumi at Patriarchal Edifice in Beth Kerke, Lebanon

BETH KERKE, Lebanon — On Wednesday, Syriac Maronite Patriarch Mor Bechara Boutros al-Rai received head of the Strong Lebanon Bloc MP Gebran Bassil (Free Patriotic Movement) to discuss the latest domestic developments at the Patriarchal Edifice in Beth Kerke (Bkerke), Lebanon.

During the meeting, Bassil stated that a solution to Lebanon’s crises cannot be reached without electing a new president by consensus. He reiterated his call for dialogue, adding that Beth Kerke is the most appropriate starting place for this dialogue.

Bassil indicated that the president of Lebanon represents all Lebanese people and the election of the next president cannot bypass the Christian component.

The Patriarch also received the head of the National Dialogue Party, MP Fouad Makhzoumi, and political advisor Carol Zwain. During their meeting, the two sides reviewed the current situation in Lebanon and discussed ways to lift the country out of its dire political and economic situation.

Makhzoumi stressed the need to expedite the election of president who will ensure Lebanon’s national sovereignty, as well as the need to prevent the country from stagnation and deliberate prevarication by those in power.

He highlighted the need to form an effective government that puts forth a clear reform plan that puts an end to the suffering of the Lebanese people and coordinates with the international community to ensure the country’s independence.
