Turkish court sentences Boğazici University students because of their protest of top-down appointment of new rector
ISTANBUL – On Friday, the 22nd Criminal Court in Istanbul sentenced 14 students over their participation in the Boğazici University protests in October 021. The students protested the appointment of a new rector who is outside of the university.
In January 2021, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan appointed by presidential decree Melih Bulu as rector of the university. After protests by students and staff he was replaced by Prof. Dr. Naci Inci, also by presidential decree.
12 of the students were sentenced to 1 year in prison and two to more than 2 years on charges of stopping the rector’s official car from entering the university campus and insults.
