Syriac Women’s Union limits annual International Women’s Day events in wake of devastating Turkey earthquake
NORTH AND EAST SYRIA — To mark International Women’s Day, celebrated on 8 March, the Syriac Women’s Union (SWU) typically organizes various activities that support women’s freedom and struggle.
The organization’s activities highlight the effective and essential role of women in society throughout history.
In comments to our news desk, SWU official in Syria Ilham Matli stated that the Union would be limiting its activities this year to mourning the victims of the devastating earthquake that struck Syria and Turkey on 6 February.
“The SWU’s activities on International Women’s Day will be limited to a march and some lectures,” said Matli. “We do not wish to detract from mourning for the victims of the earthquake that caused massive damage and left tens of thousands of people affected in Syria and Turkey.”
