Syriac Maronite Patriarch Al-Rai meets with European Parliament member László Trócsányi

BETH KERKE, Lebanon—  On Friday, the Syriac Maronite Patriarch Mor Bechara Butros Al-Rai met with European Parliament member László Trócsányi accompanied by Professor Bertrand Mathieu, at the Patriarchal Edifice in Beth Kerke (Bkerke), Lebanon.

The two sides discussed the crisis in Lebanon and the need to unite efforts of those concerned to find a final solution to Lebanon’s crises.

Trócsányi affirmed Hungary’s support for Lebanon, in light of the economic crisis that it is going through, declaring the European Union’s determination to aid (help) Lebanon.

He also stressed that aid should be preceded by restoring stability to Lebanon.

“In this situation, it becomes very difficult to imagine how Europe intends to provide aid to Lebanon,” said Trócsányi. “Therefore, it is the responsibility of the political officials in Lebanon to help find a solution, as security and peace are necessary for the future.”

Professor Mathieu declared that he worked with the Venice Commission in the advisory body of the Council of Europe, which was invited to Lebanon by the Ministry of Justice, to provide legal assistance in the proposed law on the independence of justice.

He stressed that this anti-corruption step should be followed by executive steps in several sectors, to enable institutions in Lebanon to return to work.
