Syriac Union Party in Syria issues a statement on the 108th anniversary of Sayfo Genocide

ZALIN, Syria —  On the 108th anniversary of the most heinous genocide that took place in the 20th  century, Sayfo Genocide, the Syriac Union Party (SUP) in Syria issued a statement.

The SUP indicated that the Sayfo issue has not yet received the victims’ justice or the international recognition it deserves.

History has recorded many atrocities that took place against the Syriac (Aramean-Chaldean-Assyrian) people by the Ottoman Empire during the 19th century, including the 1915 Sayfo Genocide which was decided and implemented by leaders of the Union and Progress Party.

The SUP statement added that the Genocide was committed by occupiers, against all the Syriacs, Armenians and other Christians, who live on their historical land of Beth Nahrin (Mesopotamia).

The Genocide was an attempt to end the Christians existence, seize their property, and bring about the required demographic change to serve the dirty Ottoman policies. All this amid the whole world silence.

The SUP declared that, since its establishment, it has been commemorating this painful memory. The SUP pledged to continue martyrs struggle until full international recognition of this Genocide, including Turkey.

The statement indicated that the SUP struggle, and through all institutions of the Bethnahrin National Council (Mawtbo Umthoyo D’Bethnahrin, MUB), made many countries recognize Sayfo Genocide. Important steps were achieved in the Sayfo issue, which as much as it had severe damage to Syriac people, it will have positive repercussions, in the event that we reach our demands.

The SUP affirmed continuation of struggle for this issue and many issues that concern Syriac people in Syria, so that they obtain recognition of their national, political, cultural, economic and other rights, within a democratic, pluralistic, decentralized Syria, in which justice and equality are achieved among all ethnic components.
