Syriac Orthodox Patriarch Aphrem II inspects reconstruction of historic Mor Tuma Cathedral in Mosul, Iraq  

MOSUL, Iraq — Syriac Orthodox Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II with his accompanying delegation inspected the reconstruction project of the historic Mor Tuma Cathedral in Mosul, Iraq, which was destroyed by the Islamic State (ISIS) during its control of the region in 2014.

The Patriarch was briefed on the stages of project implementation. The reconstruction phase of the cathedral is being conducted according to the agreement signed by Syriac Orthodox Archbishop of Mosul and Kerkeslokh (Kirkuk) Mor Nicodemus Daoud Matta Sharaf, in cooperation with the Swiss ALIPH organization and the French Œuvre d’Orient organization in May 2022.

During his inspection tour, Patriarch Aphrem also visited the Monastery of Mor Yoḥannān Daylomāyā (St. John of Dailam) in the Nineveh Plains town of Baghdede to see the latest works. He was accompanied by Archbishop Mor Nicodemus Daoud Sharaf and Archbishop Mor Timothy Musa al-Shamani.
