North and East Syria officials urge US to establish ‘No-Fly Zone’ in response to Turkish military escalations
NORTH AND EAST SYRIA — Representatives of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) recently held a crucial meeting with Nicholas Granger, the US State Department Special Envoy to North and East Syria. During the meeting, they urgently called upon the United States to establish a ‘No-Fly Zone’ within its areas of influence, as a response to the concerning military escalation by Turkey.
Rula Daoud, the head of the Center for Diplomatic Studies and Consultation in North and East Syria, confirmed that the meeting occurred on Sunday in Hasakah. The participants voiced their request for an air embargo to safeguard the region from Turkish airstrikes that have severely undermined security and stability. Last week, a Turkish drone killed two civilian officials and their driver in a targeted strike. Syriac Co-Chair of the Zalin (Qamishli) Canton Council, who was also wounded in the attack, described how their car was struck by three Turkish missiles.
Daoud emphasized that while the US is actively working towards mitigating tensions between Turkey and AANES, the establishment of a ‘No-Fly Zone within the Syrian sphere remains beyond its immediate capabilities. Nonetheless, the United States intends to exert pressure on Turkey to restrain its attacks on the regions of North and East Syria.
