Deteriorating humanitarian conditions in Northern Syria demand urgent attention

EDLEB, Syria — Camps in northern Syria are witnessing a grave decline in humanitarian conditions as violence escalates, the economic situation deteriorates, and the devastating crisis continues to inflict unprecedented suffering on the residents. Adding to the hardship is the reduction in support from humanitarian organizations, which has exacerbated the plight of those affected.

Displaced individuals in the camps of northern Syria are enduring dire humanitarian circumstances due to diminishing assistance from humanitarian organizations, reduced support from donors, and decreased funding from the World Food Program. The situation worsened further when Russia vetoed the extension of aid deliveries through the Syrian-Turkish border crossings. These developments have had a profoundly negative impact on the well-being of camp residents.

Prior to the conflict, more than half of the population had already been displaced, and now over ninety percent of them live below the poverty line. The escalation of violence, marked by military confrontations, bombings, kidnappings, and killings, has pushed Syrians to the brink of despair.

International humanitarian aid organizations appealed to all parties involved to prioritize the delivery of aid to prevent a catastrophic outcome.

Humanitarian organizations in northern Syria have been compelled to reduce the monthly aid provided to displaced individuals in the camps, resulting in a decrease from $60 to just $40.

Previously, UN aid reached the camps and shelters through the Bab al-Hawa border crossing, but the Russian veto has halted its entry.

As temperatures rise across Syria, humanitarian organizations in the northwestern regions, particularly in Edleb (Idlib), have curtailed the distribution of water to camp residents, adversely impacting their health conditions.
