US State Department urges swift appointment of mayor for Shigur (Şengal / Sinjar) in Iraq
SHIGUR (ŞENGAL / SINJAR), Iraq — During a press conference in Iraq, US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller reaffirmed the US’s unwavering commitment to supporting the Yezidi community and other ethnic groups that suffered from the terrorism of the Islamic State (ISIS) in Iraq. He emphasized the urgent need to appoint a mayor for Shigur (Şengal / Sinjar) District without delay.
Miller explained that the US is working closely with the Iraqi government to provide support in pursuing justice and investigating the perpetrators of crimes committed by ISIS.
Regarding the Sinjar Agreement signed in 2020 between Baghdad and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), Miller emphasized its significance as an essential and constructive step. He expressed concern over the lack of implementation and the prolonged political stalemate, emphasizing that this situation is unacceptable.
“Tangible progress in implementing the Agreement is a necessary step to enhance Iraq’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he stated.
The US Embassy in Baghdad has urged officials in Baghdad and Erbil to swiftly break the political deadlock by collaborating with the Shigur (Şengal / Sinjar) community and Yezidi leaders to appoint a mayor for the region.
