Universal Syriac Union Party President Ibrahim Mrad calls on Syrian regime to reveal fate of Syriac leader Saeed Malki
BEIRUT — On the 10th anniversary of the forced disappearance of Syriac leader Saeed Malki by the Syrian regime, President of the Universal Syriac Union Party (USUP) in Lebanon Ibrahim Mrad called for Malki’s fate to be revealed.
Malki was kidnapped by the Syrian security apparatus at the Qamishli International Airport on 12 August 2013.
“Today is 10th anniversary of the arrest our comrade from the city that he greatly adored. His comrades remain severely disturbed because his fate is still unknown,” Mrad stated via Facebook. “During the previous years, the Syrian regime has not revealed anything about his fate, except some information that lack evidence and credibility.”
Mrad added that despite all attempts by international humanitarian organizations and high church authorities, they were unable to learn the truth about his fate.
“His arrest was arbitrarily and due to his demand for freedom and rights of his people and the Syrian people as a whole, by purely peaceful means,” Mrad continued.
He stressed that they are determined to reveal Malki’s fate by all means, whether he was alive or a martyr.
Mrad called on the Syriac patriarchs to again contact Syrian authorities to release comrade Malki. He also called on the United Nations to uncover prisons and mass graves to end the suffering of tens of thousands of families and children of the Syrian and Lebanese peoples, in order to stop pain and injustice that they both experienced.
“Arresting our comrade has only increased our conviction in our struggle, in defense of freedom and rights of Syriac people and all peoples seeking freedom, democracy, and consolidation of resistance and sacrifice against repressive dictatorial regimes and terrorism,” Mrad concluded.
