Syrian Representative to United Nations: Turkish occupation of Syrian land impedes stability

NEW YORK — The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) convened on Wednesday to deliberate the monthly report concerning peace efforts in Syria. The report highlighted that no single entity can secure victory in the ongoing Syrian conflict and underlined the necessity of a political resolution involving multiple stakeholders.

During the session, Syrian Representative to the United Nations Bassam al-Sabbagh conveyed concerns about the presence of Turkish forces on Syrian territory. Al-Sabbagh noted that Turkish air and drone strikes on Syrian territory violates international law and hampers the prospects of a lasting peace process. He further emphasized that Turkey’s support to some opposition factions deemed terrorist organizations by the Security Council further complicates the path toward resolution.

In his address, al-Sabbagh criticized Turkey for contributing to demographic shifts in the region. He underscored that the persistent presence of Turkish forces negatively impacts Syria’s stability. Concurrently, al-Sabbagh appealed for the removal of sanctions on Syria, citing the need to improve living conditions and the nation’s economic prospects.

UN Envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, disclosed ongoing discussions with Arab foreign ministers and Turkish officials. He committed to sustained engagement with actors from Arab countries, the Astana format nations, Western counterparts, and other relevant entities, in pursuit of a comprehensive political solution for Syria.
