Foundation stone for Mor Eliya Church laid in Anhil village in Tur Abdin, Turkey
ANHIL, Turkey — The families of Barsom and Yousef Ishik have organized the construction of a church in the village of Anhil in the historic Tur Abdin region in what is now southeastern Turkey. The church, which will be a part of the Syriac Orthodox Church, will be named the Mor Eliya Church in remembrance of souls of their deceased family members.
The foundation stone for the new church was laid in a ceremonial event presided over by Syriac Orthodox Archbishop of Tur Abdin Mor Timotheus Shmuel (Samuel) Aktaş and Father Jirjis, a member of the family, in the presence of a large crowd of believers from the various villages of Tur Abdin and diaspora.
The new church will be built on the ruins of a previous church, also named Mor Eliya Church, that had collapsed.
After the foundation stone-laying ceremony, everyone was invited to lunch at the Church of Mor Kyriakos in Anhil.
Archbishop Aktaş delivered a speech in which he congratulated the attendees and the honorable family on this spiritual event.
