Syriac Studies Conference in Bashiqa, Iraq, focuses on modernizing curricula and overcoming challenges

BASHIQA, Iraq — The General Directorate of Syriac Studies convened its tenth educational conference in the Nineveh Plains town of Bashiqa, Iraq. The gathering revolved around the crucial topics of Syriac language curricula development, Christian religious education, and the multifaceted challenges faced in the realm of Syriac studies.

With the theme Our Curricula Embrace Modern Education Methods, the conference unfolded under the patronage of Iraq’s Minister of Education, Mr. Ibrahim al-Jubouri. The event, held at the Mar Gorgis Cultural and Educational Center in Bashiqa, was conducted under the oversight of Mr. Imad Salem Jajo, the General Director of Syriac Studies.

This educational symposium aligns with the annual plan set forth by the General Directorate of Syriac Studies for the year 2023. It brought together a diverse assembly of participants, including Father Daniel Behnam, the director of the Mar Gorgis Educational Center in Bashiqa, as well as school principals, a cadre of dedicated teachers, and supervisors specializing in Syriac language and Christian religious education. The event also welcomed academics, seasoned researchers, and individuals dedicated to and interested in the Syriac language, along with education officials representing the governorate.

The conference itself comprised two sessions, during which a total of 11 research papers were meticulously examined and discussed. These papers covered a broad spectrum of topics, with a particular focus on the advancement of Syriac language curricula, Christian religious education, and an in-depth exploration of the essential prerequisites and formidable challenges associated with Syriac studies.

At the close of the conference, a series of recommendations were made, charting a path for the ongoing development of educational initiatives within the Syriac language curricula.

In recognition of their outstanding contributions and unwavering commitment to the field, shields of excellence and certificates of thanks and appreciation were distributed to the esteemed participants of this transformative conference.
