Suroyo TV holds 19th anniversary gala, pays tribute to Baghdede fire victims
GRONAU, Germany — On Saturday, 30 September, the Suroyo TV held its annual gala celebrating the anniversary of its founding. This year’s gala, celebrating the Foundations 19th anniversary, was held just over the Dutch-German border in Gronau, Germany.
During the event, Suroyo TV paid a solemn tribute to the victims of the recent wedding hall fire in the Nineveh Plains town of Baghdede (Qaraqosh / Hamdaniya), Iraq, which claimed the lives of over 100 Chaldeans–Syriacs–Assyrians.
The event commenced with a moment of dedicated to the souls of the martyrs, followed by a heartfelt prayer offered by attending priests to console those affected by the tragic fire.
Renowned artist George Issa set the emotional tone with a rendition of national folk songs, paving the way for Jacob Mirza, the administrator of Suroyo TV, to reflect on its impactful journey since its establishment in 2014. Mirza emphasized the channel’s commitment to truth-telling, service to the community, and its pivotal role in amplifying the voice of the people on the global stage.
The evening also featured performances by artists Pascal Bachir and Babylonia, who delivered stirring national songs. Co-Chair of the European Syriac Union (ESU) Fehmi Vergili addressed the Baghdede fire, urging collective efforts to ensure the community’s voice is heard and advocating for autonomy to safeguard against future tragedies.
Highlighting the importance of unity, Vergili called for a consolidated front against any threats to the community and urged unified demands in international forums.
The program also included touching moments such as a tribute to individuals who dedicated their lives to serving the community and a competition with prizes for participants from various European countries.
As the event concluded, the administrators and officials of Suroyo TV, alongside representatives of institutions, symbolically cut sweets, expressing gratitude for a program that not only celebrated but also sensitively acknowledged the recent tragedy in Baghdede. The attendees commended the altered program, recognizing the significance of dedicating a substantial portion to honor the victims of the fire incident.
