As-Suwayda demonstrators form ‘National Bloc’ to sustain protests
AS-SUWAYDA, Syria — The city of As-Suwayda in southern Syria has taken concrete steps in support of the burgeoning peaceful protests that have swept across the governorate. Activists and representatives of the movement announced the establishment of a ‘National Bloc’ dedicated to bolstering the protests and representing the collective will of As-Suwayda’s people until their declared objectives are realized.
For over two months, As-Suwayda has been at the forefront of popular protests in southern Syria, advocating for the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution No. 2254, a transformation in the governance of Syria, and comprehensive reforms throughout the nation.
In a statement released on Monday, activists and representatives of the movement announced the formation of the ‘National Bloc’, stating that its primary objective is to offer unwavering support and service to the people of As-Suwayda as they pursue change.
The website noted that a series of meetings had taken place in the governorate one month ago, with the purpose of unifying efforts during this critical phase for As-Suwayda.
The ‘National Bloc’ draws together representatives from various cities and villages within As-Suwayda Governorate. Its overarching mission is to prevent the movement from losing momentum and to help it achieve its higher goals. The Bloc has disavowed any intention of assuming a leadership role within the movement.
Media outlet Suwayda24 reported that the goals of the Bloc are to actively support and nurture the peaceful civil movement, preserving its independence and upholding the diverse cultural, social, and ideological facets of the community. The Bloc is committed to steering clear of political tensions and prioritizes the voices of the people and the streets, with their rich diversity of opinions and positions, serving as the guiding compass for this national initiative.
