Tragedy and Miracle: Syriac man succumbs to injuries from Baghdede wedding hall fire, woman injured in same incident gives birth
BAGHDEDE, Iraq / BATMAN, Turkey — In the aftermath of the devastating fire that engulfed the Al-Haytham Wedding Hall in the Nineveh Plains town of Baghdede (Qaraqosh / Hamdaniya), Iraq, one more life has been tragically lost. Stephan Haitham Kahk, a young Syriac man, succumbed to his injuries, joining the list of victims of the fire. His final resting place is the Al-Qayyama Cemetery in Baghdede. Kahk’s burial ceremony was presided over by Syriac Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Mosul Mar Benedict Younan Hanno.
In a remarkable story of hope amid the tragedy, the Iraqi Ministry of Health reported that a woman who had sustained severe burns in the same fire gave birth to a baby boy in Turkey. Despite the challenging circumstances, both the mother and child are in good health.
The Baghdede wedding hall fire, which occurred on 26 September 2023, claimed the lives of over 130 people and left hundreds injured when a fire broke out during a wedding celebration attended by approximately 1,000 people. The incident continues to have profound and far-reaching impacts on the Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian community.
