After murder of Syriac elder in Tur Abdin, Syriac MP in Turkish Parliament George Aslan demands fair investigation

ANKARA — Syriac MP in the Turkish Parliament George Aslan condemned the murder of Syriac elder Gavriye Akguc (92) from the village of Enhil in the historic Tur Abdin region, pointing to the possibility of an orchestrated killing aimed at intimidating Syriacs seeking to return to their villages. Aslan also demanded the Turkish government to reveal the identities of the perpetrators.

In a speech to the Turkish Parliament on Tuesday, Aslan questioned the possibility that this crime was an individual incident, but rather an orchestrated killing aimed at intimidating the Syriac residents of these villages in order to force them to leave, especially after the return of large numbers of them in recent years.

In his speech, Aslan reminded of the events of the 90s of the last century, which resulted in the displacement of large numbers of Syriac villagers in Mardin.

He stressed that the Syriac people will remain in their ancestral homeland whatever the circumstances.

The Syriac MP called on the Turkish authorities to take all measures in order to uncover the perpetrators and those who gave them orders to carry out the crime in order to bring them to justice and hold them accountable.
