US bolsters presence in Eastern Mediterranean amid ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas
TEL AVIV — In the midst of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, the United States is intensifying its presence in the eastern Mediterranean.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that two US aircraft carriers, the USS Dwight Eisenhower and USS Gerald Ford, have been deployed to the Middle East as part of an expanded US regional deployment. Additionally, the nuclear submarine Ohio has also been positioned in the region.
The deployment of aircraft carriers in the region marks the first time the US has moved naval air assets to the region since the 2020 attack on the Taji Camp in Iraq which resulted in the deaths of two US soldiers and one British soldier.
Observers suggest that the presence of the US fleet in the waters of the Mediterranean is a clear message to Iran and its regional allies signaling the importance of preventing further escalation of conflict in the region.
