Beth Nahrain Organization for Women organizes lecture on misinformation for youth
NINEVEH PLAINS — In a proactive initiative aimed at fostering awareness and resilience against misinformation, the Beth Nahrain Organization for Women (BNOW) organized a lecture on the detrimental impact of rumors and the strategies employed in their dissemination. BNOW President Hanan Matti Touma delivered the lecture, addressing a diverse audience comprising enthusiastic young men and women.
The event saw positive participation from local youth and other concerned individuals, highlighting the significance of the subject matter. Touma led a comprehensive discussion on the mechanisms by which rumors and misinformation proliferate and the ensuing negative consequences they bring.
Touma highlighted key factors contributing to the spread of rumors and misinformation while offering strategic insights on how to effectively counter them. Emphasizing the gravity of the topic, the lecture delved into the various societal repercussions, such as the propagation of hatred, the deterioration of social and economic conditions, and the surge in unemployment — factors that collectively erode the fabric of social relationships.
A notable aspect of the discourse was the organization’s call for government agencies to enact and enforce specialized laws aimed at curbing the spread of rumors. Furthermore, the organization urged accountability measures for those involved in promoting misinformation.
