Nine schools reopen in Tel Tamr, North and East Syria, following repair of damage from Turkish attacks

TEL TAMR, Syria — In a collaborative effort between the Tel Tamr Schools Administration and the Education Authority of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria’s (AANES) Gozarto (Jazira) Region, nine primary schools have been reopened in villages that were damaged in attacks by Turkey and its Syrian National Army (SNA) proxies. The initiative to repair the schools as quickly as possible aims to ensure minimal interruption to education for students.

The Education Authority placed prefabricated rooms in villages such as Tel Nasri, Tel al-Rumman, Umm al-Masameer, al-Huwaij, Al-Alakana, Bab al-Khair, Mansaf Fawqani, and Al-Hanou, in addition to rehabilitating the school in Tel Maghas, previously destroyed by the Islamic State (ISIS).

Bahia Mammo, Co-Chair of the School Administration in Tel Tamr District, stated that these primary schools cater to 100 to 300 students each, depending on the population density of the respective village.

Statistics from the Tel Tamr Schools Administration reveal that out of 7,000 students in the district, 4,738 are currently enrolled. Approximately 2,262 students, both male and female, were deprived of their right to education due to the damage caused by the Turkish attacks.

Turkey and its proxies invaded North and East Syria, occupying Tel Abyad and Rish Ayno (Ras al-Ayn), along with several villages in Tel Tamr, on 9 October 2019. This aggression led to the displacement of tens of thousands and caused extensive damage, including the destruction of numerous schools under the Tel Tamr Schools Administration. Since then, Turkey has continued to target the region with drone strikes and artillery.
