Switzerland plans to ban Hamas, joining countries labeling it as terrorist organization
BERN — Switzerland is set to introduce a draft law aimed at prohibiting Hamas within its borders, aligning itself with nations that designate Hamas as a terrorist organization. The Swiss government has confirmed its intention to present the draft law by the end of February, citing the events of 7 October when Hamas launched an attack on Israel from the Gaza Strip, killing hundreds of civilians and taking dozens more hostage.
According to the government, the legislation equips federal authorities with the necessary tools to counter potential Hamas activities or support for the organization within Switzerland.
In parallel, German police have initiated widespread raids across four regions in search of Hamas loyalists and organizers of demonstrations supporting Gaza and Palestine.
The European Union, the United States, and several other countries have previously classified Hamas as a terrorist organization, a designation reinforced following the 7 October attack.
