Syriac Women’s Union official Georgette Barsoum calls for protection of women’s rights ahead of International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women

NORTH AND EAST SYRIA — As the International Day Against Violence Against Women approaches, Deputy Official of the Syriac Women’s Union (SWU) in Syria Georgette Barsoum advocated for the implementation of agreements safeguarding women and putting an end to violence.

In comments to SyriacPress, Barsoum articulated the primary objectives of the SWU, aiming to raise awareness among women about their rights and duties and advocating for their integral role in society. She highlights the correlation between women’s freedom and societal freedom, emphasizing that the SWU defends the rights of Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) women and women globally.

Barsoum noted that throughout revolutions and crises, women consistently demand rights, stability, and security. However, despite initial progress, women often find themselves excluded from legal frameworks and stripped of their rights when stability is achieved.

With the formation of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), Barsoum asserted that women, including Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) women, have seized opportunities whenever they present themselves to prove themselves as capable officials and administrators, assuming leadership roles across various fields. They actively participate in decision-making platforms, defending their rights and contributing to the rights of their people.

Barsoum acknowledged the profound pain and wounds borne by Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) women, stemming from experiences in wars, crises, traditions, and prevalent authoritarian mindsets. Despite facing laws that curtailed their essential rights, Barsoum highlighted that the opening of doors for women in North and East Syria has enabled them to assume roles at all levels, from the family to the highest echelons of society.
