Head of Athra Alliance criticizes election law ahead of Iraqi provincial elections
BAGHDEDE, Iraq — In anticipation of the upcoming provincial elections in Iraq, head of the Athra Alliance Yacoub Korkis asserted the Alliance’s foundation on nationalistic principles while expressing criticism of the current elections law.
Korkis emphasized that the Athra Alliance operates on the basis of political and national understandings, with a primary goal of safeguarding the national identity of the Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian people and securing their legitimate rights in their homeland of Beth Nahrin (Mesopotamia). He underlined their approach to the election file as a matter of national significance.
Critiquing the current election law as unjust to the Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian people and contradictory to the constitution, Korkis argued that the philosophy behind the “quota” law aims to empower a component that struggles to compete in general elections against larger factions until it secures representation in legislative authorities.
Korkis expressed concern about potential control of the quota seats by parties not affiliated, or only superficially affiliated with, the respective minority population.
He clarified that the Athra Alliance relies on its organizational and popular base, utilizing social media platforms to reach diverse sectors of society and present its electoral program, vision, and goals. He expressed hope that the Alliance would secure representation for the Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian people in the provincial councils.
Welcoming any political party legitimately representing the Chaldean–Syriac –Assyrian community that aligns with the belief of shared identity and common causes, Korkis extended an invitation to join the Athra Alliance, emphasizing inclusivity and unity.
