European Syriac Union addresses Lausanne Treaty impact during lecture in Sweden
VÄSTERÅS, Sweden — The European Syriac Union (ESU) organized a lecture on the Lausanne Treaty at the Syriac Orthodox Mor Elijah and Had b’Shabo Church Hall in Västerås, Sweden.
Delving into the historical context, the lecture focused on both the accomplishments and the infringements upon the rights of Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people stemming from the Lausanne Treaty. The event commenced with the screening of a documentary providing an overview of the Treaty.
ESU representative Yacoub Mirza delivered a comprehensive speech, shedding light on the factors that curtailed the rights of Syriac people within the framework of the Lausanne Treaty. Mirza emphasized the historical challenges faced by the community, stressing the importance of unifying national and patriotic demands.
“At present, it is imperative for us as a people to proactively unite our demands and engage in joint national actions. This approach is vital for defending and guaranteeing the rights of Syriac people in the face of potential new treaties amid the ongoing wars and crises in the Middle East,” Mirza stated.
Highlighting the significance of solidarity, Mirza announced that preparations are underway for a joint conference by the Bethnahrain National Council (Mawtbo Umthoyo D’Bethnahrin, MUB), aiming to encapsulate all national and patriotic aspirations of Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people in their historical homelands of Beth Nahrin (Mesopotamia).
The subsequent question and answer session allowed attendees to pose questions to Mirza, delving into the current challenges faced by Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people in Beth Nahrin.
Mirza extended gratitude to the Local Council of the Mor Elijah and Had b’Shabo Church for hosting the lecture.
